يتمحور المجلد الأول حول الخطابات التاريخية لسوامي فيفيكاناندا في البرلمان العالمي للأديان في شيكاغو في سبتمبر ١٨٩٣، حيث أشعلت كلماته الافتتاحية 'يا أخواتي وإخوتي في أمريكا' حماس جمهور من سبعة آلاف شخص، وقدّمت فيدانتا والهندوسية إلى العالم الغربي. ويضم المجلد أيضاً رسالتيه المنهجيتين كارما يوغا وراجا يوغا، اللتين أُلقيتا كسلسلة محاضرات في نيويورك خلال الفترة ١٨٩٥-١٨٩٦، وتظلان نصين أساسيين في فلسفة اليوغا الحديثة.
